SWEETWATER COUNTY, Wy. (2/17/2025) – The Wyoming Tunnel crash on Interstate 80 near Green River resulted in multiple fatalities and widespread vehicle destruction.
Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) and first responders confirmed at least two deaths as they worked to investigate and clear the wreckage.
Troopers responded to the crash at 11:37 a.m. on Friday at mile marker 90.2 in the westbound tunnel. The collision involved 26 vehicles, including 10 passenger cars and 16 commercial trucks. A fire broke out, destroying six trucks and two cars. WHP’s Crash Investigation Team remains on-site, assessing the damage and collecting evidence.
Efforts to clear debris continued through the weekend. WHP has removed half of the vehicles, reaching the middle of the 1,200-foot tunnel. WYDOT engineers confirmed the eastbound tunnel remains structurally sound and will temporarily handle two-way traffic. DeBernardi Construction is moving concrete barriers to create crossover lanes, with the new traffic pattern expected to be in place by Wednesday.
The fire caused significant electrical damage, knocking down lighting and equipment. Soot remains thick throughout the tunnel. WYDOT engineers will conduct a full structural assessment once clearing operations are complete.
Local authorities are rerouting traffic through Green River. The eastbound tunnel has width and height restrictions, and oversized vehicles must contact WYDOT for detour information.
The Wyoming Tunnel crash investigation is ongoing. WYDOT and WHP are working with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in a parallel inquiry. For more details, watch the official press conference:
