Grambling, LA (2/23/2024) – In a landmark decision, the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors unanimously voted Thursday afternoon to appoint Dr. Martin Lemelle as the next president of Grambling State University, heralding a new chapter in the institution’s history.
“This is our story. This is the Grambling State University story,” remarked Dr. Lemelle in response to the appointment, expressing gratitude to the board, the Grambling community, and his supporters.
The selection process culminated with the Grambling Presidential Search Committee narrowing down the field to three finalists: Dr. Gregory Ford, Dr. Monica Williams, and ultimately Dr. Martin Lemelle. Following interviews with six semifinalists on Grambling’s campus earlier in the month, Dr. Lemelle emerged as the candidate poised to lead the university into its next phase of growth and excellence.
Former Grambling president Rick Gallot, who assumed the role of UL System President and CEO at the beginning of the year, expressed confidence in Dr. Lemelle’s ability to lead the institution effectively from day one. “Dr. Lemelle’s appointment as the 11th president of Grambling State University guarantees a leader well-prepared on day one,” said Gallot, foreseeing a prosperous future under Dr. Lemelle’s stewardship.
Dr. Lemelle brings a wealth of experience and a deep connection to Grambling State University, having graduated from the institution in 2006 and served as the former student government association president.
His most recent role as executive vice president & chief financial officer at the Maryland Institute College of Art, coupled with his prior tenure as executive vice president and chief operating officer at GSU from 2016 to 2021, positions him as a seasoned leader ready to guide Grambling State University to new heights.
As negotiations proceed, Rick Gallot and Board Chair Dr. Jimmy Clarke are authorized to finalize Dr. Lemelle’s start date, marking the beginning of an exciting new era for Grambling State University under the leadership of Dr. Martin Lemelle.
