MONROE, La. (6/1/2026) — A tragic evening on the Ouachita River has left families and communities mourning the loss of two young girls.
According to the West Monroe Police Department, officers received a call at 5:48 p.m. Sunday reporting juveniles in distress in the water. Investigators said three juveniles were swimming in the river when two girls went under. A male juvenile was able to get out of the water and call for help.
Dive teams from the Monroe Police Department and the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to assist in the search. Crews later recovered the first victim at 7:18 p.m. The second victim was recovered about 15 minutes later.
Authorities confirmed both victims were female juveniles.
As news of the tragedy spread, family members and friends began sharing messages of grief and remembrance online. The mother of one of the victims, Jere Williams, identified her daughter on social media as 10-year-old Ja’Oni Williams.
The identity of the second victim has not been publicly confirmed. Additional details surrounding the incident remain unavailable as the investigation continues.
The Ouachita River drowning has touched many throughout Northeast and Central Louisiana. Community members have shared prayers, condolences, and support for the families during this difficult time.
