Man Critically Injured in Shooting During Booking at Rapides Parish Detention Center 1

ALEXANDRIA, La. (8/1/2026) — A man remains in critical condition after a shooting during the booking process at Rapides Parish Detention Center 1 on Friday evening.

According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. on July 31, 2026, as deputies were processing the suspect into the jail.

The sheriff’s office said the booking process included a strip search conducted by corrections deputies. During the search, the suspect allegedly became non-compliant, forced his way out of the search area, and entered a hallway inside the detention center.

Investigators say the suspect then retrieved a small handgun concealed in his crotch area and discharged one round, striking himself in the head.

Corrections deputies and medical staff immediately began life-saving measures before EMS transported the man to a local hospital. He remained in critical condition at the time of the sheriff’s office’s news release.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Corrections Security Investigators, and Internal Affairs are investigating the incident.
