TALLULAH, La. (UrbanCast: 7/30/2026) — The family of Cody “CoBlack” Short is searching for answers after he died following an incident at the Madison Parish Detention Center in Tallulah on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
UrbanCast extends its deepest condolences to Cody’s family, friends and everyone whose lives were touched by his passing during this difficult time.
The Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that an inmate died while in custody. However, officials have released few details about what happened inside the detention center and say the investigation remains active.
During an interview with UrbanCast, Major Brandon Wiltcher confirmed an inmate had died and said investigators are continuing to gather evidence before releasing additional information.
“We are investigating the case at this time,” Wiltcher told UrbanCast. “Once we’ve completed the investigation, then we might have a little bit more information.”
Wiltcher declined to confirm reports circulating on social media regarding the circumstances surrounding Cody Short’s death.
Emotional Journey
For the Short family, the call set off an emotional journey they never imagined taking.
After learning Cody had been transported to a hospital in Shreveport, family members traveled from the Houma area hoping to reach him in time.
When they arrived, the family said they were initially unable to see Cody because he remained in the custody of the Madison Parish Sheriff’s Office. According to family members, they were told authorization from the detention center was required before they could enter the intensive care unit.
After a period of waiting, the family was allowed inside.
There, Cody’s brother, Thomas Short, stood beside his brother’s bed, repeatedly pleading for him to wake up. Surrounded by loved ones, the family spent what would become their final moments with Cody before beginning the long drive home.
Cody, affectionately known throughout the community as “CoBlack,” was remembered by friends as someone whose life touched many people. Following news of his death, social media quickly filled with messages of grief, condolences and memories from those who knew him.
Among them was family friend Raman Ah’Sha, who posted an emotional message urging young men to avoid the choices that can lead to incarceration. Drawing from his own experiences, Ah’Sha encouraged others to choose family, work and a different path before another family experiences the same heartbreak.
