MEMPHIS, TN (5/8/2025) – Former Memphis police officers found not guilty in Tyre Nichols’ death following a state trial verdict Tuesday.
A jury acquitted Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith of all charges, including second-degree murder.
The officers faced seven counts linked to Nichols’ 2023 fatal beating during a traffic stop that escalated violently.

Body camera and surveillance footage showed officers restraining, kicking, punching, and striking Nichols with a baton.
Nichols, a 29-year-old father, later died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to medical reports.
Prosecutors argued the officers either used or witnessed excessive force and failed to seek medical aid.
The defense claimed Nichols posed a risk after fleeing and that officers used training-based force to subdue him.
Attorneys also argued chaotic conditions and pepper spray hindered the officers’ ability to see or stop the violence.
Two other officers, Emmitt Martin and Desmond Mills, previously pleaded guilty to federal charges and testified in court.
This trial followed earlier federal convictions where Haley was found guilty of witness tampering and civil rights violations.
Nichols’ family continues to pursue a $550 million lawsuit against the city of Memphis for his death.
