Orleans Parish, La. (8/8/2025) – The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Orleans Parish for 2025. Officials report that the resident has the neuroinvasive form of the disease.
West Nile virus is spread between wild birds and mosquitoes, with the southern house mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus) being the primary carrier in the region. This mosquito species is most active after dark. Humans can contract the virus from the bite of an infected mosquito.
Most human infections cause no symptoms, but some individuals may experience headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. Severe illness is rare but can occur, particularly in people over 65 or those with weakened immune systems.
The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board is urging residents to protect themselves by limiting outdoor activities between dusk and dawn, using EPA-approved insect repellents, and ensuring that homes are mosquito-proof with intact window and door screens.
Tips to Protect Yourself:
- Use repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, and follow label instructions.
- Stay indoors or in screened areas during peak mosquito activity hours.
- Use air conditioning or sit near a fan when outside.
