HERMANVILLE, Ms. (UrbanCast: 9/7/2026) — A Claiborne County sheriff’s deputy died early Monday after being shot while responding to a crowd near Hermanville.
The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department identified the deputy as Terrian Bailey, 45.
Deputies responded to Michael Dean’s Convenience Store on Highway 18 around midnight, according to authorities.
They were attempting to disperse a crowd following a festival when gunshots were directed toward the crowd.
Bailey was struck by gunfire and transported to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries.
A female bystander was also shot during the incident. She was transported to a hospital and is expected to recover.
Authorities launched a search for the shooter following the shooting. No arrest had been announced as of Monday morning.
Sheriff Edward Goods said investigators were receiving tips and pursuing leads. He also asked anyone with information or video footage to contact authorities.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation and gathering evidence.
Investigators have not said whether Bailey was specifically targeted. They also have not publicly identified a motive.
Bailey had served with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Department for six years.
Goods described Bailey as a dedicated deputy, family man and important part of the department. Bailey was married and had four children.
“He was the life of the department,” Goods said while remembering the fallen deputy.
The sheriff’s department announced Bailey’s death Monday and described the loss as unimaginable.
“Deputy Terrian Bailey made the ultimate sacrifice while courageously serving and protecting others,” the department said.
The department also thanked law enforcement agencies, first responders and organizations that provided assistance following the shooting.
Officials asked the community to keep Bailey’s family and fellow deputies in their thoughts and prayers.
“Your service, sacrifice, and dedication to your community will never be forgotten,” the department said.
The investigation remains active. MBI will submit its findings to the appropriate prosecuting authorities after completing its investigation.
