Alexandria, La. (UrbanCast: 10/15/2026) — With flu and respiratory virus season underway, Acadian Ambulance encourages community members to take simple steps to stay healthy and to know when symptoms require emergency care.
According to UC David Health, flu season is from October to April, with peak activity usually from December to February.
How to Reduce Your Risk:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your inner elbow.
- Stay home when feeling unwell to avoid spreading illness to co-workers, friends, and family.
- Clean and sanitize frequently touched surfaces around your home and workplace.
- Monitor symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, or fatigue.
Most mild seasonal symptoms can be managed safely at home with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter care. However, certain severe symptoms require immediate emergency evaluation.
Call 911 if you notice:
- Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain or pressure
- Confusion or difficulty staying awake
- Bluish lips or face
- Vomiting and being unable to keep fluids down, especially in children or older adults
“Our focus is on helping people stay safe and knowing when to call for help,” said Acadian Ambulance Physician Assistant Aaron Webb. “Whether it’s managing mild symptoms at home or recognizing the warning signs that require emergency care, being prepared makes all the difference for our community.”
