Arrest Made in Caleb Wilson Hazing Death Case, Bond Set at $100K

BATON ROUGE, La. (3/7/2024) — The Baton Rouge Police Department confirmed an arrest in the Caleb Wilson hazing death case, with two more suspects facing charges. Authorities have not released their names.

Chief TJ Morse identified the suspect in custody as 23-year-old Caleb McCray, a Southern University graduate and member of Omega Psi Phi. McCray faces charges of manslaughter and criminal hazing.

A judge set his bond at $75,000 for manslaughter and $25,000 for hazing, totaling $100,000.

During a press conference, Chief Morse emphasized that no one called 911 or attempted to summon medical help for Wilson. Instead, friends transported the 20-year-old student to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe Wilson died following an unsanctioned off-campus fraternity event. Southern University has since ordered the Beta Sigma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi to cease all activities.

University President Dennis Shields announced that no new members will be allowed to join any campus Greek organization for the remainder of the academic year. Internal investigations and Code of Conduct judiciary proceedings are ongoing.

Southern University Releases Statement

Following McCray’s arrest, Southern University issued a statement addressing Wilson’s death and ongoing investigations.

“We are all grieving the tragic loss of student Caleb Wilson, a valued member of our university community who passed away last week after an unsanctioned off-campus fraternity event.”

The university reaffirmed its strict policies against hazing and pledged full cooperation with the Baton Rouge Police Department and the District Attorney’s office. University officials also reminded students of available 24/7 mental health services.

Additionally, the university is working with authorities to locate a suspect in an unrelated on-campus shooting on March 2. External visitors are now prohibited in dormitories. Anyone with information should contact the Southern University Police Department at (225) 771-2770.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s death. More arrests are expected as police build their case.

We at UrbanCast and InvolvedInItAll.com extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Caleb Wilson. His loss has deeply affected Southern University, the Human Jukebox, and the Kenner community.
