Ponchatoula: Early morning shooting leaves mother dead; son in jail

Ponchatoula, LA (9/26/2023) – The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reported the arrest of 19-year-old Johnathan Payne Kliebert following the early morning shooting death of his mother.

Sheriff Daniel Edwards says at approximately 1:45 AM this morning, 911 received a call from a male, later identified as Kliebert, saying he shot and killed his mother at their home in Ponchatoula and was at a local hospital wishing to turn himself in. Deputies responded to the hospital and located Kliebert in the parking lot, while other deputies responded to the residence on Sisters Road.

When deputies arrived at the residence, they located a deceased white female, identified as 46-year-old Ashley Kliebert, in the master bedroom with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Also located near the victim was her dog, which had also been shot during the altercation.

Upon interviewing Kliebert, he disclosed he awoke in an angry state, brandished a shotgun, and killed his mother and her dog, both of whom were asleep in the bed.

Kliebert is currently incarcerated in the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, where he was charged with the following:

  • (1) count – First Degree Murder
  • (1) count – Armed Robbery (with a gun)
  • (1) count – Cruelty to Animals
  • (1) count – Aggravated Crimes Against Nature

**All persons accused of a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty.
