Federal funding will strengthen agricultural infrastructure, improve transportation efficiency, and support economic growth in Avoyelles Parish.
AVOYELLES PARISH, La. (UrbanCast: 10/30/2026) — Louisiana Central congratulates the Port of Avoyelles on receiving $4 million in federal funding for the development of a new Multimodal Truck-to-Barge Grain Transfer Facility in Simmesport, Louisiana.
The investment will improve the movement of agricultural commodities, expand market access for regional producers, and position Avoyelles Parish for future industrial growth.
Federal Investment to Strengthen Port Infrastructure
The award was announced October 27, 2026, by the U.S. Secretary of Transportation as part of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP), administered by the Maritime Administration (MARAD).
The competitive grant program made approximately $497.9 million available nationwide to modernize port infrastructure, improve freight transportation, and strengthen supply chains.
The program includes dedicated funding for small ports, recognizing their importance to rural economies and regional commerce.

“Our ports are critical economic assets that connect Central Louisiana’s agricultural producers and industries to markets across the country and beyond,” said Chris Masingill, President and CEO of Louisiana Central.
“This $4 million investment will strengthen that connection and enhance Avoyelles Parish’s competitiveness for future economic opportunities. I want to thank State Representative Daryl Deshotel for his leadership and advocacy, along with the Avoyelles Parish Port Commission and Port Director Obie Ryland for their persistence and commitment to moving this project forward. New Facility to Support Agriculture and Job Growth
The new Multimodal Truck-to-Barge Grain Transfer Facility will strengthen Central Louisiana’s multimodal transportation network by providing a more efficient connection between roadway and waterway freight movement.
This infrastructure will support the region’s agricultural sector while creating opportunities for business expansion, private investment, and job creation.
State Representative Daryl Deshotel, who represents Louisiana House District 28, emphasized the importance of cooperation in securing the investment.
“I’m truly thankful for their (Avoyelles Parish Port Commission) partnership,” said Deshotel.
“Teamwork is what it took to bring this project to fruition, and it’s that same spirit of cooperation that will continue to move Avoyelles Parish forward. But what excites me most is that this is just the beginning!”
Louisiana Central looks forward to working alongside its local, state, and federal partners to build on this investment and advance sustainable economic growth throughout Avoyelles Parish and the region.
