Rob Base, the legendary rapper behind the hit “It Takes Two,” has died at age 59 following a private battle with cancer.
News of his death was confirmed Friday through a statement posted on his official Instagram page.
“Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer,” the statement read.
Base, whose real name was Robert Ginyard, rose to fame in 1988 alongside DJ E-Z Rock with the release of “It Takes Two.”
The song quickly became one of hip-hop’s most recognizable records and helped push rap further into mainstream culture.
Meanwhile, the track remained a staple for decades at parties, sporting events, movies, and television shows.
“It Takes Two” eventually earned platinum certification and became one of the defining songs of late 1980s hip-hop.
Base and DJ E-Z Rock, whose real name was Rodney Bryce, formed the legendary duo after meeting as children.
DJ E-Z Rock later died in 2014 from complications related to diabetes.
The statement shared Friday also reflected on Base’s impact beyond music.
“Rob’s music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world,” the post stated.
The message also described him as a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force.
Following news of his death, tributes from fans, artists, and entertainment figures quickly spread across social media.
At this time, funeral arrangements have not been publicly announced.
