September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and RPL is using the occasion to highlight what residents may be overlooking.
Yes, you can check out books. However, that is only the beginning.
A free Rapides Parish Library card provides access to more than two million items. Those include eBooks, audiobooks, DVDs, streaming media and online learning resources.
But there is more.
Cardholders can access laptops and WiFi hotspots. They can also use 3D printers and Cricut machines at participating library locations.
Need homework help? There are tutoring and research resources.
Looking for work? The library offers job search tools.
Need somewhere to study, work or hold a meeting? Cardholders can reserve available spaces.
And here’s one many people may not know.
Your library card can even help get you outside the library.
Programs including Check Out Louisiana Museums and Check Out LA State Parks provide eligible cardholders free access to participating museums, attractions and Louisiana State Parks.
That is a lot of value for something that costs Rapides Parish residents nothing.
“People sometimes think they know what their library offers until they take a closer look,” RPL spokesperson Sandie Flynn Buller said.
September Comes With A Bonus
Throughout September, people who sign up for a new RPL card will receive a free canvas tote and limited-edition library card.
The library’s theme this year is “I CAN…”, emphasizing what residents can accomplish using library resources.
Library Director Celise Reech-Harper calls the card a connection to education, technology and services for every stage of life.
Getting one is simple.
Library cards are free for Rapides Parish residents. Applicants need a photo ID and can register at an RPL location. Children under 18 can apply with a parent or guardian.
Rapides Parish Library operates 10 locations and mobile library services throughout the parish.
