Grant Parish, La. (6/8/2026) — State Representative Gabe Firment said Monday he is prayerfully considering a run for Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District and expects to make a decision within the next few weeks.
In a video message shared on social media, Firment said several people have recently contacted him about seeking the congressional seat.
“I absolutely love serving as District 22 State Representative. That’s one of the great honors of my life,” Firment said. “But I also have deep roots across the Fifth Congressional District, and if I have the opportunity to serve more people and help more people than I do as a state representative, it’s certainly something I have to take seriously.”
Firment said he plans to spend the next two to three weeks in prayer and reflection before deciding whether to enter the race.
“I’m going to spend the next two or three weeks praying about this opportunity to run for Congress,” he said. “Please join me in prayer, join me as I seek God’s will for my life and try to figure out if this is exactly what the Lord wants.”
Congressional Bid
While discussing the possibility of a congressional bid, Firment highlighted his legislative record and conservative credentials.
“I will put my conservative voting record up against anyone serving in the legislature and against anyone running in this Fifth Congressional race,” Firment said.
He added, “Nobody has fought harder to protect traditional Louisiana values than I have these past five or six years.”
Firment also outlined several questions he believes voters should consider when evaluating candidates, including whether they have a proven record, the courage to stand by their principles, an understanding of the challenges facing working families, a desire to serve, and the trust of voters.
“Do they have the courage to fight for what’s right?” Firment asked. “To draw a line in the sand and say, ‘I will not compromise my values. I will not back down. I will not sacrifice my integrity.’”
Household Expenses
He also pointed to rising household expenses affecting families across Louisiana.
“Do they understand what it’s like to pay a mortgage, to struggle with the high cost of gas, utilities, groceries and insurance?” he said.
Firment said trust remains one of the most important qualities voters should consider.
“When you look them in the eye, do you trust them to do what’s best for you, for your family, for this state and for the United States of America?” Firment asked. “Do you trust them?”
No formal campaign announcement was made, and Firment did not address potential opponents during the video.
Firment said he expects to know “beyond the shadow of a doubt” within the next few weeks whether he will seek Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District seat or pursue reelection to the Louisiana House of Representatives.
“My hope is that when I come back to you in a few weeks, I’ll know exactly, beyond the shadow of a doubt, whether or not it’s God’s will for me to run for Congress,” Firment said.
