MADISONVILLE, La. (6/8/2026) — St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith surrendered to authorities Thursday following an investigation into an incident at a Madisonville restaurant.
Attorney General Liz Murrill announced the arrest after the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation completed its investigation into the May 29 incident.
Smith turned himself in at the Tangipahoa Parish Jail alongside his attorney.
Authorities charged Smith with one count of Second Degree Battery, a felony under Louisiana law. He also faces one count of Disturbing the Peace by Engaging in a Fistic Encounter and one count of Disturbing the Peace While Appearing in an Intoxicated Condition.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the charges stem from an incident that occurred during the afternoon of May 29 at a Madisonville restaurant.
“My office was asked to conduct an investigation into this matter. After the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation conducted a thorough investigation, charges were filed against St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith,” Attorney General Murrill said in a statement.
Court records show Smith’s total bond was set at $10,000.
Meanwhile, the investigation remains active. State investigators have not released additional details regarding potential future developments.
The arrest marks a significant development involving the elected sheriff of one of Louisiana’s largest parishes. However, officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.
The arrest warrant has been made available for public review.
All persons are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
