ALEXANDRIA, La. (1/20/2025) – Coach Charles Smith, a 2024 Naismith Hall of Fame inductee and celebrated educator, delivered an impactful speech at the 2025 Alexandria Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Noon Day Service. Drawing from his 54 years of experience as a coach and leader, Smith emphasized the importance of faith, perseverance, and standing on the shoulders of a great man.
Reflecting on the Jim Crow era, Smith shared how the concept of “two Americas” profoundly shaped his worldview. “There was one America for white people and one for Black people,” he said, “but during those times, a man arose who reminded us that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Smith explained how this message from Dr. King inspired him to think outside the box, not just in his coaching career but in how he approached leadership and equality.
Quoting Proverbs 3:5-6, Smith encouraged the audience to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” He attributed much of his success to this principle, stating that faith and a willingness to see beyond present circumstances have been key in his journey.
Smith’s Achievements
Known for his remarkable achievements at Peabody Magnet High School, Smith has led his team to nine state championships and over 1,200 wins, making him one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in the nation. Beyond his record-breaking career, he has mentored over 80 students who earned college scholarships, with two reaching the NBA and three playing professionally overseas.
During his speech, Coach Smith called on the audience to carry forward Dr. King’s legacy by seeking unity and standing against injustice. He reminded everyone that the progress made was built on the sacrifices of those who came before.
Smith’s words left the audience inspired and reflective, embodying the values of service and leadership that Dr. King championed. His lifetime of dedication to empowering young minds stands as a beacon of hope and a call to action for all.
