Targeted Shooting on Bayou Drive Sparks Criticism Over City’s Crime Prevention Efforts

A targeted shooting on Bayou Drive in Alexandria early Friday morning has raised concerns about public safety and city accountability.

At approximately 5:53 a.m. on November 15, 2024, Alexandria Police Department officers responded to the 200 block of Bayou Drive. The victim was shot at close range in what police believe was a deliberate attack.

The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities have not released details about the suspect or motive but emphasized the targeted nature of the incident. Despite ongoing investigations, residents in District #1, known as one of the city’s most neglected and crime-ridden neighborhoods, question the city’s commitment to meaningful change.

City officials announced plans to deploy new crime prevention measures through SAFEAlex, focusing on code enforcement and addressing abandoned structures that pose risks. However, no specific timeframes were provided for when these measures would be implemented. This lack of clarity has left residents skeptical, with many expressing frustration over what they see as a pattern of unfulfilled promises in District #1.

“It feels like we’re always told things will improve, but we never see action,” said one Bayou Drive resident. “We need real solutions, not vague plans.”

The Family

The victim’s family has also expressed frustration over a lack of timely communication from authorities and hospital staff. They reported that police did not notify them promptly, nor did they inform them of the hospital where the victim was being treated. Adding to their distress, hospital personnel failed to confirm the victim being treated and provide updates. The family ultimately learned through a third party that the victim had undergone emergency surgery and remains in critical condition.

Authorities have pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, additional patrols and outreach efforts are planned to address immediate safety concerns in the area. Residents are encouraged to report suspicious activities and assist in the investigation by contacting the Alexandria Police Detective Division at (318) 441-6416 or APD Dispatch at (318) 441-6559.
