Reminder: Rapides Regional Trauma Center to Hold Stop the Bleed Training

Free 10-minute session could save the life of someone you know

Alexandria, LA (5/23/2024) – In recognition of National Stop the Bleed Day on May 23, the Rapides Regional Trauma Center is hosting several free hands-on Stop the Bleed training sessions for the community. The American College of Surgeons has identified blood loss as the leading cause of preventable death following an injury. Learning how to stabilize a bleeding victim and apply a tourniquet could potentially save a life.

Training Sessions Schedule:

  • HP Long in Pineville: 8 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.
  • South Tower Lobby at Rapides Regional Medical Center: 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.
  • Rapides Women’s and Children’s Hospital Atrium: 11 a.m. – Noon

“Stop the Bleed is a national awareness and education campaign aimed at preventing victims from bleeding to death,” said Shawn Moreau, MSN, TCRN-CEN, Rapides Regional’s Trauma Program director. “Bleeding is the number one preventable cause of death after an injury. And bystanders are often the first to offer aid.”

Each training session, which lasts less than 10 minutes, will cover three essential techniques:

  • How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound
  • How to pack a wound to control bleeding
  • How to correctly apply a tourniquet

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, a person who is bleeding can die from blood loss within five minutes. Therefore, individuals nearest to someone with life-threatening injuries are in the best position to provide critical, life-saving care before first responders can arrive.

“It’s simple, quick to teach, and easy to apply. Everyone from children to adults can be taught,” Moreau added.
