NEW ORLEANS, La. (1/1/2025) – A tragic Bourbon Street terrorist shooting and crash early Wednesday morning claimed at least 10 lives and left 35 people injured. The FBI has confirmed it is investigating the incident as a terrorist attack.
The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, drove a truck through barricades near Bourbon and Canal streets, targeting New Year’s Eve revelers. After traveling three blocks and colliding with heavy machinery near Conti Street, Jabbar exited the vehicle, fired at police officers, and was fatally shot.
Authorities reported that Jabbar was dressed in military gear and carried an ISIS flag in his truck. An improvised explosive device was also discovered at the scene, intensifying concerns of a larger coordinated attack.
The attack extended beyond Bourbon Street. Dozens of individuals were evacuated from an Airbnb in the St. Roch area after a fire broke out, which law enforcement linked to the suspect.
Melissa Dedeaux, the mother of 18-year-old victim Nikyra Cheyenne Dedeaux from Gulfport, Mississippi, expressed her anguish on Facebook. “This was an act of terrorism, and now my baby is gone… I lost my baby. Please pray for me and my family,” she wrote.
Officials are investigating whether additional suspects were involved. They are seeking public assistance in providing photos and videos related to the attack. The FBI has launched a tip portal at fbi.gov/bourbonstreetattack.
Due to the ongoing investigation, the Sugar Bowl game has been postponed until tomorrow. A news briefing initially scheduled for 11 a.m. has been moved to 1 p.m.
