SHREVEPORT, La. (UrbanCast: 9/30/2026) — Shreveport Police have arrested a suspect following a shooting that claimed the life of 13-year-old Sha’michal Russell and injured two other juveniles.
Police arrested Javieon Abbott and charged him with one count of second-degree murder. Investigators said additional charges are expected, and additional arrests remain possible.
The shooting happened Monday near the basketball court at Olde Salem Village Apartments on Buncombe Road.
Three juveniles were struck by gunfire, including Sha’michal, a 2-year-old child and a 17-year-old.
Sha’michal suffered life-threatening injuries and later died.
His family told KSLA that Sha’michal was shielding his 3-year-old sister when the gunfire erupted. She was not struck.
Detectives with the Shreveport Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit worked through the night and following day pursuing leads.
Louisiana State Police and the FBI also assisted through the Gator Task Force.
Shreveport Police Chief Wayne Smith said detectives remained determined to seek justice for Sha’michal, his family and the other children injured.
The investigation remains active.
For Sha’michal’s family, however, this case is about far more than an arrest. A 13-year-old child lost his life, while reportedly trying to protect his little sister from gunfire.
