Alexandria man turns himself in without incident after escape from custody

Alexandria, La. (4/16/2026) – An Alexandria man turns himself in without incident Thursday afternoon after previously escaping from Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office custody during a domestic investigation.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on April 16, 2026, Jamar Baxter arrived at the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office with family members. Deputies took him into custody without incident and booked him on outstanding warrants.

Earlier, deputies had been actively searching for Baxter following his escape on April 15. The incident began around 2:41 a.m. in the 4700 block of North Bolton Avenue. Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance involving a child and reports of a possible weapon.

Deputies identified the suspect as 25-year-old Jamir Yasin Baxter. They took him into custody at the scene and secured him in a patrol unit. However, while deputies continued their investigation, Baxter damaged the plexiglass divider inside the unit.

He then forced his way into the front seat, opened the door, and fled the area. Deputies later confirmed the escape after reviewing in-car video.

Law enforcement launched an extensive search, including detectives, K-9 units, and special operations teams. Despite developing several leads, deputies were unable to locate him before he turned himself in.

RPSO thanked its Facebook followers, media partners, and the Baxter family for assisting during the search.

This remains an ongoing investigation.
