Alexandria, La. (UrbanCast: 8/5/2026) – Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson was remembered Wednesday as a devoted father, husband, son, and public servant during an emotional press conference announcing a federal indictment against the man accused of killing him.
The legal announcement carried deep emotion. However, the most powerful moments came from the front row. Family members and close friends fought back tears while listening to officials recount Hanson’s life, service, and final sacrifice. His young children sat quietly nearby, creating a scene that was difficult to put into words. The grief inside the room was unmistakable.
A federal grand jury in the Western District of Louisiana indicted Clarence Albert Frazier Jr. on multiple charges. Prosecutors allege Frazier murdered Deputy U.S. Marshal Hanson while officers attempted to serve arrest and search warrants at a Rutland Road residence in Alexandria on July 13.
According to U.S. Attorney Zachary Keller, the indictment charges Frazier with murdering a federal officer, attempting to murder a U.S. Marshals Service task force officer, assaulting two officers with a deadly weapon, using a firearm during those violent crimes, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Keller also confirmed the indictment includes the allegations necessary to begin the federal death penalty review process.
Reflected on Hanson’s Life
Before discussing the charges, Keller reflected on Hanson’s life instead of focusing only on his death.
He described Hanson as a husband and father in his 30s who chose to return home to Alexandria after pursuing opportunities elsewhere. Keller said Hanson fulfilled his dream of becoming a deputy U.S. marshal while serving the community he loved.
Keller also reminded the public that law enforcement officers willingly run toward danger while others run away from it.
U.S. Marshal Brian Barber opened the press conference by honoring Hanson and thanking the local, state, and federal agencies that have worked together since the shooting. Barber expressed confidence in investigators, prosecutors, and the judicial system. He also said those responsible for killing or violently attacking law enforcement officers must face the full consequences of their actions.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Trapp outlined the investigation. He said officers announced themselves before entering the residence to execute warrants for Frazier, who had failed to appear for trial. Investigators allege Frazier waited inside a bedroom before opening fire on officers.
The exchange of gunfire lasted about four seconds.
Investigators said Hanson was struck once by a bullet that bypassed his ballistic vest. Frazier suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds before officers took him into custody. The FBI also said the handgun allegedly used by Frazier had previously been reported stolen in Alexandria.
Rapides Parish Sheriff Mark Wood used his remarks to highlight the daily risks officers face. He urged the community to pray for Hanson’s family and every law enforcement officer serving today.
Throughout the news conference, officials repeatedly shifted attention back to Hanson rather than the investigation. They spoke about his character, his commitment to public service, and the family left behind.
Yet no words seemed capable of matching what could be seen across the room.
