Opelousas Police Arrest 13-Year-Old, 16-Year-Old After Wal-Mart Shooting Investigation

Opelousas, La. (5/23/2026) – Two juveniles are facing multiple charges after a shooting Thursday afternoon inside the Super Wal-Mart on Creswell Lane in Opelousas.

According to the Opelousas Police Department, investigators arrested a 13-year-old and a 16-year-old in connection with the incident. Police said both juveniles were charged with illegal use of a dangerous weapon, attempted second degree murder, aggravated criminal damage to property, and illegal carrying of a weapon by a juvenile.

Authorities said both juveniles will remain in a juvenile detention facility pending a court hearing.

Investigators believe the Opelousas Wal-Mart shooting began after the juveniles arranged to meet at the store to exchange firearms. However, police said an altercation broke out during the exchange. As a result, gunfire erupted inside the business.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Police also thanked responding law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel for their quick response during the incident.
