ASH renames MCJROTC building to honor Colonel Joseph Martin Jr.

ALEXANDRIA, La. (4/30/2026) – Alexandria Senior High School has renamed its MCJROTC building to honor a leader who helped shape generations of cadets.

The building now carries the name of Colonel Joseph Martin Jr., a retired U.S. Marine who led the program for more than two decades. School leaders, cadets, and community members gathered for the dedication, reflecting on his legacy and service.

Martin retired from the Marine Corps in September 2000. One year later, he joined ASH as Senior Marine Instructor and built a culture of discipline and excellence. Under his leadership, the drill team won five state championships starting in 2003, including back-to-back All-Service Armed Drill titles.

He also helped establish the CyberPatriot program at ASH, expanding student opportunities in science and technology.

Martin retired from the program in 2023 as the longest-serving Senior Marine Instructor in its history. His influence continues through the cadets he mentored.

Master Gunnery Sergeant Terry Hall highlighted the program’s history during the ceremony. Since 1981, a line of Marine instructors has shaped the program. Those leaders include Major Ronald Ellison, Major James Rust, Master Sergeant Truman “Top” Sullivan, Master Gunnery Sergeant Charlie Davis, and Hall. They built a foundation centered on discipline, leadership, and service.

The ceremony also reflected Martin’s deep community ties. He served as pastor of Second Union Missionary Baptist Church, and many church members attended. Representatives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. were also present, recognizing his lifelong commitment to service and brotherhood.

Speakers from the school, church, fraternity, and community shared reflections. Cadets participated in key moments, including TAPS and the national anthem. Family members also spoke about his impact beyond the uniform.

The renaming ensures future cadets will learn about Martin’s life and leadership. It also reinforces the standard set by those who built the program.
