Evangeline Parish, La. (3/5/2026) — A Mamou house fire claimed the lives of two residents early Tuesday morning in Evangeline Parish.
The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating the deadly residential fire that occurred on March 3, 2026.
According to officials, the Mamou Fire Department responded to a reported fire at approximately 3:32 a.m. The fire occurred in the 800 block of 5th Street.
Firefighters arrived to find a home heavily involved in flames. Tragically, a 67-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman died as a result of the fire.
Investigators with the State Fire Marshal’s Office later determined the Mamou house fire started at the front of the residence. However, the exact cause remains under investigation.
Additionally, the severe damage to the home has limited investigators’ ability to determine several key details. Officials have not confirmed whether the residence had a working smoke alarm.
Meanwhile, state fire officials are using the tragedy to remind Louisiana residents about the importance of fire safety.
“Fire-related deaths are always devastating, and many are preventable,” said DPS Principal Assistant Chief Bryan J. Adams.
He added that working smoke alarms provide critical early warnings during emergencies. That warning allows families more time to escape safely.
Through the Operation Save-A-Life program, the State Fire Marshal’s Office provides free smoke alarms and installation for Louisiana households.
Officials encourage residents to take advantage of the program to protect their homes and families.
Residents seeking more information about fire safety can visit lasfm.org. They may also contact their local fire department to request a free smoke alarm installation.
