Speculation Grows Around Candice Cheney and Alexandria Council At-Large Seat

Alexandria, (2/27/2026) — Speculation is growing around the Alexandria City Council At-Large seat after UrbanCast received information from a source close to Candice Cheney indicating she may consider challenging incumbent Jim Villard.

UrbanCast then contacted Cheney directly to confirm the information.

Cheney did not formally announce a campaign.

Cheney currently serves as Vice President of the Samtown/Woodside Neighborhood Group. She is a retired Louisiana state employee and was an active member of AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Union), where she served as president and vice president at the local and international levels, fighting for equal rights and fair labor practices for all employees. She also previously served as a GAEDA commissioner after being appointed by former Councilman Joe Fuller.

She is a member of Oakland Missionary Baptist Church and Ruth Chapter 29, Prince Hall Affiliated.

When asked about the possibility of running, Cheney said it is “time for new gatekeepers.” She said she does not see anyone currently willing to take on the responsibility and truly work for the people.

When pressed on whether she intends to enter the race, Cheney stopped short of confirming a candidacy.

She said the community needs to see candidates step forward and publicly share their platforms. If a strong candidate emerges, she said she would support that person. Otherwise, “if it’s the Lord’s will,” she would consider stepping forward herself.

Incumbent Jim Villard currently holds the at-large seat.

UrbanCast will continue to follow developments.
