Sabine Parish, La. (2/25/2026) – Fisherman drowns on Toledo Bend Lake Tuesday morning in San Patricio Bay. Authorities identified the victim as Richard Edward Whatley, 71, of Haughton.
Sheriff Aaron Mitchell said deputies discovered Whatley around 9:30 a.m. on February 25, 2026. They found him in the water near the bank at the end of Ed Callie Road.
Meanwhile, Whatley’s boat was still running nearby. Deputies secured the scene and began a preliminary assessment.
At this time, investigators have not determined exactly how Whatley drowned. However, authorities believe he may have fallen out of his boat.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is leading the investigation. Officials will release additional details once they confirm more information.
Furthermore, Sheriff Mitchell and his staff extended their condolences to Whatley’s family and friends.
