Samtown/Woodside Neighborhood Group Meeting Highlights GAEDA Role and EquiHarvest Market Plans

Alexandria, La. (2/17/2026) — The Samtown/Woodside Neighborhood Group Meeting brought residents together at New Scott Oliver Baptist Church to discuss economic development and neighborhood investment. Community members gathered to hear updates and engage directly with presenters.

First, Angie Varnado delivered an insightful presentation on the Greater Alexandria Economic Development Authority.

Varnado explained GAEDA’s role in supporting business expansion and building strategic partnerships. Moreover, she detailed how collaboration can strengthen economic development in the City of Alexandria. Varnado emphasized that partnerships remain essential to attracting sustainable growth.

Next, Mr. Rick Horton and his partner Harlan Victor, Jr. of EquiHarvest Market provided crucial information about the proposed supermarket. They described the project as a neighborhood-focused grocery store designed to improve food access. Additionally, they outlined plans for a 9,000 to 15,000 square foot footprint in Alexandria.

EquiHarvest Market leaders stated the store will offer fresh produce, affordable staple goods, and culturally relevant grocery options. They also highlighted local hiring and workforce development as priorities. The project aims to address food access challenges in a USDA-designated food desert.

City officials and community leaders attended the meeting. Councilwoman Cynthia Perry, District 3, participated in the discussion. Willard “Bubba” McCall, RPSB Member and president of the Acadian Village Neighborhood Group, attended. Diane Clark, President of the Lower Third Neighborhood Group, was present. Barbara Dashiell, Executive Director of Inner City Revitalization Corp., also attended.

Refreshments were provided by EquiHarvest Market for attendees. As a result, the gathering created a welcoming atmosphere for open dialogue and collaboration.
