Rapides Parish, La. (1/20/2026) – An accidental shooting near Lecompte claimed one life early Monday morning, according to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Monday, January 19, 2026, patrol deputies and other first responders responded to a report of a shooting inside a vehicle traveling northbound on U.S. 71 near U.S. 167, south of Lecompte.
According to initial information, a passenger was handling a firearm when it accidentally discharged. The round fatally struck the passenger in the head. The driver immediately called 911 for assistance but explained they were unfamiliar with the area. As a result, dispatchers instructed the driver to meet emergency medical personnel in the parking lot of Rapides High School.
Emergency medical services arrived and assessed the victim at the meeting location. EMS determined the individual was not breathing and unresponsive. Sheriff’s detectives and the Crime Scene Unit then responded to continue the investigation. Shortly afterward, the Rapides Parish Coroner’s Office arrived and pronounced the individual deceased.
Detectives say the investigation remains ongoing as they review all available evidence. However, at this time, authorities believe the incident was a tragic accident. Investigators say there is no indication of foul play.
