Rapides Deputy Attacked With Molotov Cocktail, Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder

Alexandria, La. (1/7/2026) — On January 7, 2026, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Rapides Parish patrol deputies responded to the 5100 block of Bonnie Loop in Alexandria. The response followed a request for assistance from a fellow deputy who reported being attacked.

When deputies arrived, they observed a uniformed School Resource Officer holding a suspect at gunpoint in a residential yard. Deputies took the suspect into custody without further incident.

Authorities identified the suspect as Robert Joshua Ellis, 36, of Alexandria.

According to the deputy, the incident began as he approached his marked RPSO vehicle to report for duty. At that moment, Ellis allegedly threw an object toward the deputy.

When the deputy turned, investigators say Ellis charged at him while wielding a four-foot heavy-duty floor scraper. Ellis allegedly swung the tool at the deputy during the confrontation.

The deputy sidestepped the attack just in time. The scraper’s blade reportedly cut the deputy’s uniform jacket. The deputy then created distance, drew his service weapon, and ordered Ellis to the ground.

Ellis complied with commands until patrol deputies arrived. Deputies placed him under arrest at the scene.

During the investigation, deputies located the object allegedly thrown at the deputy. They identified it as a glass bottle filled with gasoline and fitted with a rag. Investigators classified the device as a Molotov cocktail.

Sheriff’s detectives and the RPSO Bomb Squad responded to the scene. Investigators executed a search warrant at the residence. They located additional incendiary devices inside the home.

The RPSO Bomb Squad rendered the devices safe. Detectives continued their investigation following the discovery.

Authorities transported Ellis to the Rapides Parish Detention Center for booking. Investigators charged him with multiple felony and misdemeanor offenses.

Ellis faces charges including attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, aggravated battery of a police officer, and manufacture or possession of an incendiary device. Additional charges include criminal damage to property, criminal trespass, disturbing the peace, and hate crimes.

Ellis remains in the Rapides Parish Detention Center. Officials have not set bond at the time of this release.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law or administrative action.
