Health Risks, Who Is Most Affected & Symptoms

The bacteria Listeriosis (caused by Listeria monocytogenes) can cause serious illness, especially in pregnant women, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems.

  • For pregnant women, symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. Even mild illness can result in pregnancy loss, premature birth, or life-threatening infection in newborns.
  • For others (age 65 +, immunocompromised), symptoms may include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, in addition to fever, muscle aches, and tiredness.
  • Symptoms usually begin within two weeks after eating contaminated food, but they may start the same day or up to ten weeks later.

What You Should Do Immediately

  • Do not eat any of the recalled foods listed above or any related products containing recalled pasta.
  • Clean your refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have contacted the recalled food items — Listeria can survive in the refrigerator and spread to other foods and surfaces.
  • If you are pregnant, aged 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system, call a healthcare provider immediately if you experience symptoms after consuming the affected foods.

Investigation Status & Fast Facts

  • Investigation remains open and a recall has been issued.
  • At least 27 illnesses, 25 hospitalizations, and 6 deaths have been reported so far, with distributions across 18 states.
  • Since the product was distributed nationwide, it may still be in homes.
  • Health officials warn the true number of sick people is likely higher than reported because some do not seek medical care or are not tested.
