Alexandria, LA – (October 14, 2025) – The Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office (RPSO) has taken another significant step toward improving community safety.
Sheriff Mark Wood recently announced the addition of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to Resident Deputy patrol units across the parish.
Through funds allocated from the nationwide opioid settlements, the Sheriff’s Office purchased 14 AEDs to equip Resident Deputies, the Rapides Area Drug Enforcement (RADE) Unit, and two Sheriff Substations. These lifesaving devices were obtained through state-appropriated funding derived from settlements with pharmaceutical companies.
Sheriff Wood emphasized that Resident Deputies are often the first to arrive at emergencies, especially in rural parts of Rapides Parish. Therefore, having AEDs readily available can make a critical difference in saving lives.
“These devices can be crucial in treating individuals suffering from not only overdoses but also cardiac arrest,” Sheriff Wood explained. “All of our deputies have been issued and trained in the use of NARCAN, the standard treatment for opioid overdoses. Adding AEDs gives us another tool to help save someone’s life in the event of cardiac arrest caused by an overdose or other factors.”
The total cost of the 14 AEDs was $24,500. Sheriff Wood stated that he plans to explore opportunities to equip additional deputies with AEDs in the near future.
By reinvesting opioid settlement funds into lifesaving tools, the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to strengthen its commitment to community safety and proactive emergency response.
