Green Fentanyl: Deadly New Drug Threat Spreading Across the Northshore and Greater New Orleans Area

HAMMOND, La. (October 13, 2025) — The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO), in partnership with local and federal law enforcement agencies, has issued a Public Safety Alert about a dangerous new trend: the emergence of “Green Fentanyl” in the Northshore and Greater New Orleans area.

Recent seizures in ongoing investigations confirm this new variant of fentanyl is now circulating across multiple parishes, posing an immediate and significant threat to public health and safety.

What to Know About Green Fentanyl

Authorities describe this version of fentanyl as green in color, with a texture resembling sidewalk chalk, gel, or tar. Because of its appearance, law enforcement warns that it can easily be mistaken for cannabis or other, less potent drugs.

Fentanyl is an extremely powerful synthetic opioid—up to 50 times more potent than heroin. A lethal dose for the average adult can be as little as two milligrams, roughly equivalent to two grains of salt.

Officials say this new form of fentanyl has been linked to a recent increase in opioid-related emergency calls across the Northshore, prompting the immediate release of this safety warning.

Recognizing an Opioid Overdose

It’s critical for residents to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose and act fast.
Call 911 immediately if you observe any of the following:

  • Severe sleepiness or inability to wake up
  • Slow or absent breathing
  • Snoring or gurgling noises
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • Blue or gray lips and fingertips
  • Very small pupils

Overdose Response & Life-Saving Resources

  • Call 911: Always report suspected overdoses immediately.
  • Administer Naloxone (Narcan): This life-saving medication can temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Free naloxone kits and training are available through public health initiatives across Louisiana.

Help Is Available
The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to participate in Operation Angel, a program that allows individuals struggling with addiction to seek treatment without fear of arrest. Those in need of help can visit any TPSO office or call 985-747-9696 for confidential assistance.

Anyone with information about the distribution of green fentanyl or related activity is urged to contact the TPSO Public Information Office at pio@tpso.org or 985-747-9696, or reach out to your local law enforcement agency.
