Alexandria, La. (9/3/2025) — A heavy police response unfolded Wednesday afternoon on Chester Street near Rapides Avenue after Alexandria Police officers were fired upon while responding to reports of shots fired.
UrbanCast first reported the incident shortly after 1:00 p.m., noting that one individual, not an officer, had been struck and transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Later in the afternoon, Louisiana State Police confirmed they were requested to take over the investigation. According to LSP, one subject was shot and has been pronounced deceased. No officers or residents were harmed during the encounter.
Statement from Alexandria’s Police Chief
APD Chief Chad Gremillion told UrbanCast the scene was under control and there were no threats to public safety at this time. He also confirmed that the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police were assisting with the investigation, and that LSP would lead the inquiry because the incident involved officers discharging their weapons.
Witness Accounts
Witnesses described the incident beginning as a heated argument between the suspect and other individuals. One witness told UrbanCast the man fired multiple rounds toward a house before police arrived. Officers reportedly ordered him to put down his weapon at least twice. The witness said the suspect then turned and fired at officers, who returned fire.
Another witness reported that stray rounds damaged a nearby home and a car.
Violence in the Same Area
This shooting happened less than 24 hours after another incident just blocks away. On Tuesday night, a man was shot on Rapides Avenue near Cottage Street and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Alexandria Police. That case also remains under investigation.
Ongoing Investigation
Detectives with the Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations are now processing evidence and interviewing witnesses in the Chester Street case.
Authorities are asking anyone with information, photos, or video to come forward. Tips may be shared anonymously online at lsp.org under “Report Suspicious or Criminal Activity,” or by calling the LSP Fusion Center Hotline at 1-800-434-8007.
