CHENEYVILLE, LA (8/7/2025) — On Saturday, August 2, Derrick Johnson & Associates hosted a dual-location Back-to-School Supplies and Backpack Giveaway. The event directly supported local students and families in Cheneyville and Bunkie.
The event kicked off at On the Campus in Cheneyville from 12 PM to 3 PM, then continued at Sheppard Park in Bunkie from 4 PM to 6 PM. Volunteers handed out free backpacks filled with school supplies to hundreds of students, served refreshments, and engaged directly with families.
Derrick Johnson, former mayor of Cheneyville, led the effort with a clear focus: supporting youth and preparing them for the school year ahead.
“This is about more than just handing out backpacks,” said Johnson. “We want to show these kids they’re supported, that their success matters, and that our community stands behind them.”
Each backpack included notebooks, pencils, folders, and other classroom essentials designed to equip students for a successful school year. The events were marked by joyful energy, gratitude from parents, and excited smiles from children eager to head back to school prepared.
Johnson, known for his consistent investment in community uplift, emphasized that this effort is part of a broader commitment.
“This is just the beginning,” he said. “We’ll keep building, giving, and making sure our communities have what they need to thrive.”
