Morgan City Woman Arrested for Animal Cruelty After 14 Dead Cats Found in Freezer

MORGAN CITY, La. (3/17/2025) – A Morgan City woman was arrested for animal cruelty after officers discovered 23 dead cats, including 14 stored in a freezer.

On March 13, Morgan City Police responded to a welfare concern at a home on McDermott Drive. Officers noticed rotting food deliveries and a strong odor coming from the house. While checking the residence, they saw a dead cat inside.

Authorities made contact with 71-year-old Sheri Hite, who allowed officers inside. Investigators reported an unbearable stench and multiple dead cats throughout the home.

The next day, detectives executed a search warrant and uncovered eight more dead cats in various rooms and 14 inside a freezer. Only one cat survived and was taken to a rescue.

Hite told police she picked up stray cats in Baton Rouge to care for and planned to dispose of the frozen ones later. She was arrested on 23 counts of Aggravated Cruelty to Animalsand remains in Morgan City Jail awaiting court proceedings.
