Governor Jeff Landry Declares State of Emergency for Winter Storm in Louisiana

BATON ROUGE, La. (1/18/2025)Governor Jeff Landry has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana in preparation for a severe winter storm expected next week.

The declaration, issued on January 18, 2025, comes in response to forecasts predicting extreme cold, wind chills below 20°F, and potential snow accumulation across the state. The National Weather Service has advised residents to prepare for power outages and freezing conditions beginning Sunday, January 19, 2025.

Governor Landry emphasized the need for statewide readiness to protect lives, property, and essential infrastructure. The declaration enables state agencies to coordinate resources and provide critical support to all 64 parishes.

The winter storm is expected to disrupt travel and potentially damage crops and unprotected pipes. Cold air will bring high temperatures in the 30s and dangerous wind chills lasting through Thursday, January 23, 2025.

Parishes across Louisiana are preparing to issue local emergency declarations, with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) overseeing state response efforts. GOHSEP will ensure food, shelter, and other necessities are available in affected areas.

Residents are encouraged to minimize outdoor activity, prepare their homes for freezing conditions, and stay informed through official updates.

The state of emergency allows for faster mobilization of resources to mitigate the storm’s impacts and protect Louisiana’s citizens.
