Special Council Meeting Called Amidst Controversy Over Alexandria District Redrawing

Alexandria, LA (3/21/2024) – The City Council of Alexandria has announced a special meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at the City Council Chambers.

The meeting, prompted by a proposed ordinance aimed at redrawing district lines within the municipality, comes amidst growing debate and opposition from former Councilman Gerber Porter and concerned citizens.

Councilwoman Lizzie Felter’s proposal to amend City Council Ordinance No. 153-2022 regarding district boundaries has ignited controversy within the community. The ordinance seeks to redefine boundaries for Districts Two, Three, and Four, while reiterating and reenacting existing boundaries for Districts One and Five.

Additionally, it aims to amend and reenact Article III of Chapter 2, Sections 2-46 through 2-50 of the Alexandria Code of Ordinances, pertaining to City Council Districts.

In response to the proposed ordinance, former Councilman Gerber Porter has issued a public statement urging citizens to oppose it. Porter’s letter, addressed to the media and shared with the community, outlines steps for citizens to voice their opposition, including contacting council members, attending public hearings, and mobilizing others in the community.

“It is imperative that we prevent this ordinance from being approved,” Porter emphasized in his letter, highlighting the importance of citizen engagement in the democratic process.

Furthermore, UrbanCast/involvedinitall.com, a local multi-media platform for news, has extended an invitation to both former Councilman Porter and Councilwoman Felter to participate in a discussion or interview regarding their positions on the proposed ordinance. This opportunity aims to facilitate open dialogue and provide clarity on the intricacies surrounding the redrawing of district lines in Alexandria.
