Alexandria, LA (1/17/2024) – During the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Noon Day Service, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Fire Department proudly awarded 13-year-old Jayla Sargent with the Heroism Award. Jayla is student at Scott M. Brame Middle School.
The recognition stems from Jayla’s remarkable act of bravery on the morning of November 21, 2023.
On that fateful day, Jayla fearlessly entered a burning home, prioritizing the safety of others over her own. Her heroic efforts resulted in the rescue of a person in need, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the well-being of her community.
Chief Sam Allen commended Jayla for exemplifying the true essence of heroism, while Mayor Jacques Roy expressed gratitude for her exceptional bravery. The City of Alexandria, through this award, aims to highlight and celebrate the courage demonstrated by individuals like Jayla who go above and beyond to make a positive impact in the face of adversity.
Jayla’s Heroism Award serves not only as a testament to her bravery but also as an inspiration to the community and her peers. In honoring her actions, the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria Fire Department reaffirm the importance of recognizing and celebrating acts of selflessness that embody the principles of unity and compassion advocated by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The speaker for the Noon Day Service was Dr. Helen Benjamin. Dr. Benjamin is a native of Alexandria and a 1968 Graduate of Peabody Magnet High School.
