Beaureguard Parish: Man dies in a Singer house fire

Singer, LA (9/7/2023) – The State Fire Marshal (SFM) deputies continue to investigate a house fire in Singer that claimed the life of a male resident.

Around 5 a.m. on Tuesday, September 5, the Singer Fire Department responded to a call for a house fire located in the 200 block of Frank Burgess Road. Upon arrival, firefighters learned a neighbor had attempted to rescue the home’s sole occupant but had been unsuccessful. Unfortunately, firefighters later found a man’s body in the home’s living room.

While official identification and cause of death are pending with the Coroner’s Office, the victim is believed to be the 66-year-old homeowner.

Following an assessment of the scene, deputies have determined the fire began in the home’s living room area. At this time, deputies have been unable to rule out the possibility of electrical malfunction related to improper wiring as a possible contributing factor to the cause of this fire.

Regarding electrical safety, the SFM recommends avoiding the continued use of appliances or areas of a home concerning electrical activities until a licensed electrician can review and repair any issues found. Also, avoid long-term and unintended uses of extension cords to create non-traditional power sources in the absence of official utility services.

Lastly, there were no working smoke alarms in the home. The SFM wants to stress to all Louisiana residents that smoke alarms have proven to be the difference between life and death in a fire emergency, no matter the type of home.
