ALEXANDRIA, La. (2/3/2025) – An Oakdale man sentenced to 60 years in prison pled guilty to charges in the murder of Derrick Harris.
On Monday, February 3, 2025, Nicholas Earl Holmes admitted guilt to manslaughter and conspiracy to commit murder. These charges stem from the 2023 death of Harris during a Glenmora drive-by shooting.
Holmes received a 40-year hard labor sentence for manslaughter and 20 years for conspiracy. The sentences will run consecutively, totaling 60 years. The Rapides Parish District Attorney’s Office confirmed Holmes’ guilty plea as part of a court agreement.
Derrick Harris, 19, was fatally shot on May 16, 2023, during a graduation party in Glenmora, Louisiana. Police investigations revealed an altercation between Harris and the suspects, which led to the shooting. The Glenmora Police Department, in collaboration with the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, identified Holmes and two other Oakdale men as suspects.
The sentencing highlights the culmination of efforts by law enforcement and the legal system. Harris’ family attended the courtroom proceedings and witnessed the plea agreement.
Chief Jacob Hicks, Glenmora Police, expressed gratitude for the community’s assistance during the investigation. “Derrick was a bright young man who brought light to those around him,” Hicks stated, urging residents to honor Harris’ memory.
Nicholas Holmes was represented by attorney Tiffany N. Sanders. Rapides Parish Assistant District Attorney Kelvin Sanders prosecuted the case.
