Lecompte, LA (10/31/2024) – A fatal shooting in LeCompte early this morning has left one man dead, according to an official release from the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office.
At approximately 1 AM on October 31, 2024, the LeCompte Police Department responded to a report of a shooting in the 2400 block of Union Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim, unresponsive and not breathing, who appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds. Despite efforts from Acadian Ambulance and Fire District 18, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has been identified as James Barfield, 34, of LeCompte. According to the investigation conducted by LeCompte Police and Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Detectives, Barfield was involved in a verbal altercation with the suspect, identified as Arcenio Ramon Bowie, 35, also of LeCompte.
During the argument, Bowie allegedly brandished a firearm and fired multiple shots at Barfield, causing fatal injuries. Bowie reportedly fired additional shots at witnesses before fleeing the scene.
Based on evidence and witness statements, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Bowie on charges of second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. At approximately 3 AM, Bowie turned himself in to Sheriff’s Detectives and was taken into custody without incident. He is currently held in the Rapides Parish Detention Center with a bond set at $1,500,000.
