DeRidder, LA (6/10/2024) – The DeRidder Police Department is advising all residents to secure their vehicles after receiving multiple reports of an unknown individual checking for unlocked cars last night. Authorities emphasize the importance of locking vehicles to prevent potential theft and burglary.
“Always lock your vehicle whenever it is left unattended,” a DeRidder Police Department spokesperson stated. “Studies have shown that the vast majority of vehicles that are burglarized or stolen have been left unlocked. Don’t be the next victim.”
To ensure the safety of your vehicle, the police department recommends the following simple steps:
- Always lock your vehicle, even when it’s parked in your driveway or garage.
- Always take your keys or fob with you.
- Never leave or hide a smart key, valet key, or spare key anywhere in or on your vehicle, no matter where you park it.
- Never leave your car running while unattended or unlocked.
- If possible, park your vehicle in a locked garage.
- Park in well-lit areas.
- Keep the exterior of homes and driveways well illuminated.
- Close all your vehicle’s windows completely when parked.
- Never leave valuable personal property and/or weapons in your vehicle.
If anyone has more information regarding the recent suspicious activity or observes anyone acting suspiciously, they are urged to contact the DeRidder Police Department at 337-462-8911. For emergencies, dial 911.
This advisory comes in light of a similar incident in Alexandria, where a vehicle crashed into a house on Stracener Street. The Alexandria Police Department is currently investigating that incident, which highlights the broader issue of vehicle security in the region.
By following these safety tips and remaining vigilant, residents can help protect their property and reduce the risk of becoming victims of vehicle-related crimes.
