Bishop Robert Marshall, Jr. Announces Appointment of Sylvia Yancy Davis as Catholic Schools Superintendent

Alexandria, LA (3/15/2024) – Bishop Robert Marshall, Jr., of the Diocese of Alexandria, has recently announced the appointment of Sylvia Yancy Davis as the new Catholic Schools Superintendent, effective April 1, 2024. Mrs. Davis brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new role, having served the diocese as the Coordinator of Catholic Schools for the past seven months.

With over four decades of experience in education, Mrs. Sylvia Davis has left an indelible mark on both public and Catholic school systems alike. Her journey began at Pineville High School within the Rapides Parish public school system, where she served as a ninth-grade English teacher before rising to the position of assistant principal.

Mrs. Davis holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Grambling State University and a Master’s of Education degree from Northwestern State University, with certifications in Secondary Reading, Administration, Supervision, and Supervision of Student Teachers. Furthermore, she has completed over 30 hours of continued studies at Northwestern and Louisiana State University.

Mrs. Davis’s contributions to the public school system and the community have been recognized and honored, most notably with the inaugural Sylvia Yancy Davis Black Excellence Award. Her dedication to education continued even after retirement, as she taught at Holy Savior Menard Central High School in Alexandria before joining the Catholic Schools Office in 2020 as the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent.

In her new role as Catholic Schools Superintendent, Mrs. Davis will oversee the implementation of Bishop Marshall’s vision for Catholic education and provide support to principals and pastors across the eight schools located in the Diocese of Alexandria. Her appointment underscores the diocese’s commitment to offering the highest quality education for young people in the community.

Outside of her professional endeavors, Mrs. Davis remains actively involved in her church parish, St. Juliana Catholic Church in Alexandria, and dedicates her time to organizations such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Known for her storytelling prowess, Mrs. Davis enjoys engaging audiences of all ages and spending quality time with her family while cheering on the New Orleans Saints football team.

The Diocese of Alexandria Catholic Schools’ Office looks forward to Mrs. Davis’s leadership and guidance as they continue to nurture and support Catholic education in the community.
