Alexandria City Council Faces Criticism Over Transparency Issues Ahead of Tonight’s Meeting

Alexandria, LA (5/28/2024) – The Alexandria City Council is set to meet today at 5 PM, amid growing concerns over the Council’s recent policy of not sharing supporting documents for agenda items with the media and public. This lack of transparency has led to significant frustration and unanswered queries from the community.

Despite numerous calls, emails, and text messages, Council members have not responded to requests for information regarding this policy change. The lack of communication has only intensified public scrutiny, particularly directed at Councilwomen Perry and Felter.

Both are employed by the Rapides Parish School Board, which is known for its transparency in making agenda items and supporting documents available to the public in a timely manner before meetings. The contrast in transparency practices between the School Board and the Alexandria City Council has been a focal point of public criticism.

Of particular concern on today’s agenda are items 12 and 17. Item 12 involves the final adoption of an ordinance authorizing the mayor to accept the low bid for annual work uniforms for various departments. Item 17 pertains to the final adoption of an ordinance for the selective demolition and protective measures for the former Weiss and Goldring Building.

These items are significant due to their financial and community impact, making the lack of accessible supporting documents especially troubling.

The full agenda for today’s meeting includes:

The public’s inability to access detailed information on these items before the meeting is seen as a step backward in government transparency. As residents prepare to address the Council this evening, the demand for transparency and accountability continues to grow. The outcome of this meeting could significantly impact the Council’s relationship with the community and its approach to governance moving forward.
