Secret Service Shoots Armed Suspect Near White House; Bystander Also Hit

Washington, DC (5/23/2026) — The Secret Service confirmed Saturday evening that agents shot and killed an armed suspect near the White House after gunfire erupted close to 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue.

According to a preliminary statement from the United States Secret Service, the incident happened shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday. Officials said a man pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing in the area.

Secret Service officers immediately returned fire, striking the suspect. Emergency crews transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

During the exchange, one bystander was also struck by gunfire. However, officials have not released that person’s condition.

Meanwhile, authorities said no Secret Service officers suffered injuries during the incident.

The Secret Service confirmed President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time. However, officials said the incident did not impact any protectees or operations.

Additionally, FBI Director Kash Patel stated federal agents are assisting the Secret Service with the investigation.

Congresswoman Julia Letlow also released a statement following the shooting. She said she was praying for President Trump, Secret Service agents, and those near the White House while officials gather more details.

The Secret Service shooting near White House grounds remains under investigation. Authorities said they will release additional information as it becomes available.
