Cleveland, MS – (9/16/2025) – The Delta State University community is grieving the death of Demartravion “Trey” Reed, a 21-year-old student who was found hanging from a tree on campus Monday morning.
University staff discovered Reed shortly after 7:30 am, and authorities were notified immediately.
The Bolivar County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity and noted there were no signs of physical trauma that would suggest an assault. An autopsy at the Mississippi State Crime Lab will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Prompt Response from Officials
Delta State University canceled all classes and centennial events on Monday, and administrators quickly provided updates to the public. University Police and local authorities continue to investigate, with the coroner’s office emphasizing transparency and asking the community for patience while facts are gathered.
On Tuesday morning, Delta State shared a heartfelt message acknowledging Reed’s passing and the grief it has brought to the campus. Hundreds of students gathered Monday night for a candlelight vigil in his memory.
A Community in Mourning
“Trey was loved by many, and his loss is deeply felt across our campus,” the university said. “We will continue to hold each other close in the days ahead.”
State Representative Robert L. Sanders also issued condolences, encouraging the community to unite in compassion, grace, and support during this painful time.

Counseling and support services remain available for students through the O.W. Reilly Counseling Center and for faculty and staff through Human Resources. University leaders emphasized that their focus is on supporting Reed’s family, friends, and the student body as they grieve together.
