Rapides Parish Voters Approve Tax Renewals, Backing Youth and Senior Services

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (12/8/2024) – Rapides Parish voters have approved all tax renewals/continuation on the December 7 ballot, reaffirming their commitment to vital community programs. Among these was the renewal for the Renaissance Home, which passed with 55% of the vote (Yes: 5,797 – No: 4,880) despite vocal opposition.

The Renaissance Home tax renewal ensures continued funding for the juvenile detention and rehabilitation facility, which provides care for at-risk youth. The measure received strong endorsements from Sheriff Mark Wood, District Attorney Phillip Terrell, and State Senator Jay Luneau, who highlighted the facility’s importance to public safety and rehabilitation efforts.

Governor Jeff Landry also expressed his support for the Renaissance Home, stating, “This facility provides a critical service to our community by offering young people an opportunity to turn their lives around. Its continued operation is essential for the safety and future of Rapides Parish.”

Former residents, staff, and parents echoed this support. One employee remarked, “Keep the Renaissance… fewer kids here ensure that trends of overcrowded facilities don’t exist. This place makes a difference.” A former resident shared, “Renaissance is way better than some other places in Louisiana. It changed my life for the better.”

Other tax renewals included funding for senior citizen programs, roads, fire protection, and recreation districts, all of which received majority approval. The senior services renewal passed with 61% of the vote, demonstrating Rapides Parish’s dedication to supporting vulnerable populations.
