STATE: Shooting Incident on East South Street – Opelousas PD Make Arrests

Opelousas, LA (2/4/2024) – The Opelousas Police Department (OPD) announced an arrest related to an altercation that resulted in one person sustaining injuries from gun violence.

At approximately 9:31 AM on February 4, 2024, OPD responded to a shooting incident in the 500 block of East South Street. The incident came to light when the department received a call from Opelousas General Hospital, reporting that a 29-year-old black male, identified as Keenan Charles, had arrived with a gunshot wound to his right hand.

During the investigation, officers uncovered that Charles had been shot in the 500 block of East South Street following an altercation with another individual. The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Dexter Broussard Jr., a resident of Opelousas.

Broussard voluntarily met with officers and was subsequently transported to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s office. He has been charged with attempted manslaughter and disturbing the peace by fighting. Charles, the victim, is also facing charges related to the incident, specifically disturbing the peace by fighting.
